“HAPPINESS HELD IS THE SEED; HAPPINESS SHARED IS THE FLOWER.” -John Harrigan
Growing Home
We’re Jarod and Julie Anderson, flower farmers at our family farm in the heart of Eastern Kansas. It started with a casual conversation when Julie mentioned that she had dreamed of being a flower farmer. Jarod, who had grown up on a farm and cattle operation, wanted to raise cattle like his father and grandfather, but on a smaller scale. We thought we would get a few acres once the kids were grown, but life had other plans. In 2023 after the loss of his grandmother and then unexpected loss of his father, Jarod was faced with inherited farmland and some big decisions. Together we decided to leave our jobs, all the hustle and bustle of city life, and pursue flower farming and homesteading full time. In 2024 we moved onto the farm and we’ve been been going full speed ever since, converting the cropland into native pastures, mending fences, restoring and creating wildlife habitats for native species, and growing lots of flowers and vegetables!
We are truly best friends and work so well together. Julie is the dreamer, and Jarod makes all of those big dreams come true. We like to joke that we are the ultimate Brady Brunch with 8 kids between us! Our youngest three are in high school, and our oldest five are adults and working and in college. We are truly enjoying watching all of them blossom into their teens and adulthood. We have two farm dogs, Beren and Freya, who do a marvelous job at keeping the predators away and providing a lot of entertainment. We have two farm cats, one who stays indoors, and another who rolls around in the sunshine and grass. We have chickens, ducks, and turkeys. We hope to add cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs in the next few years.
About the farm
Our land has been in the family since 1859 and we are the fifth generation to farm here. Jarod’s grandparents, Elsie and Don, lived where we are now. The original workshop is still standing, but sadly the house was lost in a fire in 2020. The grain bins have been converted to house our on-farm store. We are so proud to continue this legacy, and preserve the land for generations to come.
There are a couple of really beautiful meadows on the farm that we are working on increasing the native species in. This is one of our favorite meadows to walk through. When left to bloom it hosts many native species such as blanket flowers, butterfly milkweed, oxeye daisies, and wild blue indigo.
